    In a hotel

    French hotels are approved and checked by the authorities which classes them into six categories: no star, 1 star, 2*, 3*, 4* and 4*L (Luxury). All must display their rates (including tax) outside the hotel and in the rooms. In general rooms provide a double or twin beds. Supplements can be charged for an additional bed and for breakfast.

    As well as independent hotels, there are also dozens of hotel chains from 1* to 4*L spread throughout the country.

    To book your room, ask at the Tourist Information Offices, or at booking agents for the chain hotels.

    At a campsite

    France offers 9,000 fully equipped campsites rated from 0 to 4* and 2,300 farm campsites. The Official Campsite Guide is on sale at bookshops, newsagents, FNAC [national chain of department stores selling books, CDs, computers .] and all good retailers, as well as by mail order (postage and carriage: 3 euro per copy).

    Camping off-site is permitted with the authorization of the landowner, but prohibited on beaches, roadsides or at designated sites.
